I have over thirty years of building handmade furniture for residential and commercial clients, and clients in the hospitality industry as well. Making things has always been just the thing I wanted to do, and the thing I did - I was never a math whizz, or the standout sportsperson. But luckily I grew up in rural Ireland where I was free to make whatever I could with whatever I found hanging around in the old farm buildings at home, and that’s what I did. I became the one who did the house repairs too at home, and this all led on from there. I don’t think that’s a unique story, I think this is how many of us get into working with our hands, and I like that. I like to think I’m just one of many millions of people who contribute their particular passion and skills to whatever it is we’re all doing here!
As much as possible the furniture I make is handcrafted from responsibly sourced woods, many times from local urban loggers right here in Los Angeles, and that circle of attention between the client, the logger, and the maker is a big part of what gives each piece its feeling of particularity to this place.
Of course, every time I’m making a piece of furniture I work hard to make that piece aesthetically attractive. It may well be unique in form, but before that it should be beautiful, graceful, and practical for what it will be used for.
Good relationships are key to what I do. The lumber suppliers where I source much of my lumber are committed to environmental sustainability and concern for the fate of the planet, values I feel I pass on in my work. But my most important commitment is to the customer: I would like you to enjoy your furniture for years to come, and making that happen starts with an initial conversation, but doesn’t end after a purchase.
