The owner of this travel company wanted a reception desk for their new office at Santa Monica airport, a light filled space that looks right out on to the runway. We decided to make a desk that allowed the light to pass through, and with the warmth of real wood.
A local urban forestry I know told me he had milled and dried a tebebuia tree. I had to look that one up - it's from Central America. This one grew in Huntington Gardens and was blown down in a wind storm. It is the heaviest, most difficult to work with wood I've ever encountered, but it was finally worth it. The grain and color are special, and I think it's good that it's in a place a lot of people get to see it and enjoy it.
